There’s not long to wait if you want to get your hands on a seriously fast and capable SUV. Before the end of 2018, the fantastic Ateca will be available with a scorching 300hp engine and Cupra badging. For the first time, Cupra is becoming a standalone brand, and the Cupra Ateca will be the first car to benefit from its new logo and sporty styling upgrades.
Every angle and detail of the Cupra Ateca has been designed to complement the stunning performance on offer. At the front, a large honeycombed grille is painted in gloss black, there are new air intakes on the front spoiler and bespoke Cupra badging. Sportier suspension means the ride height has dropped by 15mm, and the square arches are handsomely filled with 19-inch alloy wheels. From the rear, you can marvel at the four chrome exhaust pipes and large spoiler.
The Cupra Ateca will come with a 300hp 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that you can also find in the Leon Cupra. Marshalling all that rampant power will be the job of the permanent all-wheel-drive and a slick automatic gearbox. It’s expected to be able to accelerate from 0-62mph in under 5.5 seconds, making it one of the very fastest SUVs for this price.
But it isn’t simply a one-trick pony. SEAT’s engineers have bolstered the suspension, which is adaptive as standard, to make sure it’ll handle corners incredibly well. You’ll also enjoy a comfortable ride, which will make the Cupra Ateca a delight to live with on a day-to-day basis. Beefy brakes will haul the car to a stop in a short distance.
Because the Cupra Ateca is a SEAT, you’ll still get all the practicality of the Ateca SUV. Even with five adults on board, 510 litres of boot space is available for lifestyle gear, shopping or anything else you are transporting. The rear seats can fold down to offer almost 1,600 litres of space. You’ll be supported through fast sweeping bends thanks to sophisticated sports seats, and your back seat passengers will enjoy the ride in comfort and plenty of room.
As well as the extra performance on offer, the Cupra includes a lot of standard equipment that highlights its status as the top Ateca. There’s a digital driver’s display, which is intuitive and replaces analogue dials, an eight-inch high-res touchscreen with satellite navigation, driving information and smartphone mirroring, and a 360-degree camera to make placing and parking your car a breeze. Extra comfort features like heated seats, an electric tailgate and self-parking are also available.
No one will mistake the Cupra for an entry-level model, thanks to its flat-bottomed steering wheel, Alcantara seats and door cards, contrasting stitching and Cupra badges. The interior is a special environment that will make you excited for even the smallest journeys.
